What is a hazard?
A hazard is something that could potentially harm someone or create adverse effects on health.
What are the different types of hazards?
There are 8 different types of hazards these are:
- environmental: worn or damaged equipment, wet floors could cause trip hazards resulting in sprains, bruising or fractures or even being knocked unconscious.
- biological: medical or waste products not being disposed off correctly. Poor levels of hygiene= infection and disease.
-chemical: medicines incorrect dose adminstered, wrong medication. Cleaning materials incorrectly stored or used can cause serious physical harm.
Psychological: stress and fatigue, long working hours, coping with challenging behaviour,violence, abuse from service users, bullying in the workplace.
Physical: excessive loud noises at work eg. vaccum= ringing in ears= deafness.
Radiation from electromagnetic rays such as x rays.
Musculoskeletal: manual handling of equipment. Back or muscle injuries if not carried out correctly (both service users and/ or resident or patients.
Working conditions: Temp- workplace is too hot or cold. Dehydration. Worsen conditions such as athma.
Noise levels impact hearing.
Travel- long distances= stress tiredness.
-Working practises: excessive working hours= tiredness or lack of concentration leading to mistakes or accidents.
Lack of supervision with new staff or those taking on new tasks- training and supervision needed avoid accidents.
- Lack of security systems: no door locks, alarm systems are faulty. Poor maintenance. Unauthorised access to strangers who pose a threat to individuals in care environments.

- helping someone out of bed
- lifting heavy equipment
- violent or abusive service users

- broken furniture
- wet floors
How can hazards impact employees in care settings?
- mental ilnesses such as depression or stress. Physical effects eg. high blood pressure if workload is excessive.
-Back injuries if they do not receive adequate training for manual handling.
How can hazards impact employers in care settings?
Manager or owner
eg. manager or owner of a care home.
- being taken to court
- organisation being closed down.
- fined
- poor reputation
- failed inspection
How can hazards impact service users?
- individuals who require care and support may not receive adequate care if staff do not have enough time to do their jobs properly. Staff shortages. Lack of training.
- staff who do not maintain high levels of hygiene can cause infections to spread among individuals such as colds or MRSA.
- financial loss if a service users belongings are stolen or damaged using a care service.

Why would standards of care be poor?
Employees feel tired, forget to give medication on time or lack of time to do their job properly.

Why would impacts of hazards result in financial loss
- loss of earning due to time off work
- loss of job
- theft of personal money or belonging.
What are the 2 types of abuse?
- Intentional abuse
- Unintentional abuse
What is intentional abuse?
Intentional abuse is deliberate.
Eg. physical abuse, financial abuse, verbal abuse etc.
What is unintentional abuse?
- occurs due to being careless.
- lack of training to do task correctly.
- negligent
eg. nursing home resident suffering from dehydration due to their fluid intake not being monitored.
