What is meant by equality?
ensuring everyone has equal opportunities, making sure people do not experience discrimination as a result of their differences.
Why is it important to treat individuals with equality?
They could experience:
- lack of self confidence
- feeling judged
- feeling isolated
What does diversity mean?
recognising, valuing and respecting individual differences.
What does inclusion mean?
creating an environment where everyone feels valued, their differences are respected, and they are able to reach their full potential.
What does respect mean?
Treating individuals in a way that allows them to feel valued and allowing them to express their feelings and opinions, even if you disagree with them.
What does empowerment mean?
ensuring individuals are supported to make decisions about their own care and treatment and have control over their life.
What does dignity mean?
Treating individuals in a way that respects their rights, values and beliefs and does not undermine their self-worth.
What is independence?
Ensuring individuals are able to meet their own needs as much as possible.
What is meant by equal opportunities?
Ensuring that everyone, regardless of protected characteristics is able to access the same level of services,without discrimination.
What are rights?
freedoms and protections that everyone is legally entitled to which set out legislation.
What is meant by right of choice?
choice gives individuals control over their life and increases their self-esteem as it promotes independence.
What is meant by right of confidentiality?
information should only be shared on a need to know basis, like with other workers
What is meant by right to protection from harm and abuse?
safeguarding procedures should be in place to ensure that vulnerable adults and children are not harmed. Risk assessments should be carried out and a safe environment should be maintained.
What is meant by right to equal and fair treatment?
Everyone should be given the same opportunities to access education, health and social care. Providing the same treatment does not always garuntee equality because different people are in different situations and have different needs.
What is meant by right to consultation?
Individuals should be asked for their opinions and views about the type of care they would like, views taken account wherever possible.
