LO 3 Flashcards
Define: Immunization
Process by which resistance to an infectious disease is induced or augmented
Define: Immunity
The specific resistance of a host to an infectious disease
- ex. once you get chicken pox you will not get that disease again
Define: Antigen/ Immunogens
Substance, usually protein, that induces a specific immune response
- Can be bacteria or viruses
Define: Antibodies / Immunoglobulins (Ig)
Protein molecules produced by the host in response to stimulation by an antigen… resulting in immunity
What are the two types of antibodies/ Immunoglobulins?
Immunoglobulin M (IgM) Immunoglobulin G (IgG)
Define: Immunoglobulin M (IgM)
- First antibody produced
- Largest antibody molecule
- Pentomer (contains 5 IgG’s)
- does NOT last long in the host
- Presence indicates current or recent exposure to antigen
Define: Immunoglobulin G (IgG)
- Follows production of IgM
- Long lasting antibody
- Presence indicates past exposure to antigent
Where can we find IgM and IgG?
Present in the blood and other body fluids
*Humoral fluid = blood stream
