May not be able to tell people what is happening e.g dementia, unconscious
Define lacking mental capacity
Individuals are unable to make decisions about there care due to mental health, learning disability or are unconscious from illness
Why are care services with institutional practices more likely for abuse to happen
Don’t respect privacy, comfort, individuality
Difficult to changes views as it becomes accepted
Why are health services more likely for abuse to happen
More vulnerable because ill
Staff viewed as being in positions of power and trust
Understaffed - more stressed, less time to carry out duties
Why are independent living facilitates more likely for abuse to happen
Not staffed at all times
Targeted by others
Prevised as needing less care
May lose contact with family
Why are the homeless more likely to experience abuse
Don’t have a permutant address - harder to get services
Takes offers of places to stay from people that could abuse them
Stay in unsafe public places
May not have contact with family + friends - why are they homeless
Why are adults and children residing in health and social care settings more likely for abuse to happen
Settings seen as safe
Staff seen as being in power + trustworthy
Individuals scared to report due to fear of losing home, responsible for HSC professional losing there job or going to prison
Why does situations where people are dependent on others make abuse more likely
relying on others for care - personal care, appointments, medication
carers stressed - individual displays channelling behaviour
Why does relationships where there is an imbalance of power make abuse more likely
belittling individual
trusting/respecting people more because of there role e.g police, doctor
Why does situations where there is an invasion of privacy make abuse more likely
Vulnerable - not closing door when getting dressed,
embarrassed - having people help you with intimate care needs
