What are the 3 branches of government?
legislative (house of commons), judicial (the court and judges), executive (prime minister and cabinet)
What does federal labour law have control of?
airlines, railways, post offices
What is the Competition Act?
Federal statute to prevent unfair trade.
How can you bring a case to the supreme court?
Obtain permission or leave, an issue of national importance.
What does provincial court include?
Provincial criminal court, civil small claims court.
What does the charter of rights and freedoms do?
Establishes individual rights that apply to all Canadians and non-citizens.
What is a statute law?
It can be enacted by both federal and provincial governments but must be compatible with the constitution to become enforced.
What is common law?
Are not created by legislation, but created by judges based on the principles of law and equality.
What is public law?
Deals with rights and obligations of government, and criminal law.
What is private law?
Deals with rights and obligations of individuals, contracts or property.
What are standards?
Are globally accepted guidelines to ensure quality and safety, written bu public organizations.
What are codes?
Are government written legally enforced standards, ex. NBC - National Building Code.
Indemnification
Reimburse another party for loss incurred.
What is a creditor?
Party to who money is owed.
What is a debtor?
Party that owes the money.
