This shows how alone the Gran is and the way that she serves no purpose but to give presents.

Just as gilt is fake so to is the rival using a facade to make herself seem better than the speaker.

Comical tone shows the way that the rival has become more of an enemy to the speaker than herself.

This shows the speaker and the rival’s feelings towards each other being bitter.

Shows the distant relationship between the speaker and her partner.
