Living World Flashcards
What is a reflex coordinated by?
Nervous system
Reflexes can described by?
Stimulus response model
The nervous system is composed of?
Central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord)
Peripheral nervous system (nerves that connect the central nervous system to the rest of the body)
Receptor cells
Once the cells have detected a stimulus, information in the form of electrical impulses pass rapidly from the receptors along the peripheral system to the central nervous system.
Electrical impulses travel through the nervous system via neurons (also know as nerve cells).
Neurons grouped together form a nerve
There are 3 types of neurons
Sensory neurons - carry the impulse generated by a stimulus to the central nervous system
Interneurons - carry the impulse through the central nervous system
Motor neurons - take the impulse to effectors such as muscles or glands
A neutron is a long cell with the following features
Cell body - contains a nucleus and supplies energy and nutrients for the activity of the neuron
Dendrites - receive messages from receptors and other neurons
Axon - a long structure through which the nerve passes along
The endocrine system uses chemical messages called?
Hormones
Hormones are produced in your endocrine glance and are released into your?
Bloodstream
Hormones are carried to the parts of your body, only certain cells receptors for?
Particular hormones
Hormones control and regulate functions like?
Metabolism
Growth
Development
Sexual reproduction
The endocrine system also works with the nervous system to regulate your bodies responses to?
Stress
The affects of the endocrine system are often slower and generally longer lasting than those of the?
Nervous system
There are certain situations where the nervous system and the endocrine system will work together to respond to a stimulus.
E.g responding to fear
The glance that work together to control growth are?
Hypothalamus
Pituitary
Thyroid glands
