Living with tectonic hazards - Gateway 1 (FULL QUESTIONS) Flashcards
Describe the core.
The core is mostly composed of iron and nickel. It is divided into a solid inner core that is 1200km thick, and a liquid outer core that is 2100km thick. Its temperature ranges between 3000°C and 5000°C.
Describe the Mantle.
The mantle is mostly solid rock but flows under high temperature and pressure and is 2900km thick. It is divided into the upper and lower mantle. The upper mantle is a layer of solid rock and the asthenosphere is where the rocks are close to melting point and are easily deformed. The temperature between 800°C and 3000°C.
Describe the crust.
The crust is the outermost layer on which we live. It is made of 2 types of crust, oceanic and continental crusts. The oceanic crust is found beneath oceans, is only 5-8km thick and is denser than the continental crust, while the continental crust is
