What are two things that all animals need to have to survive?
The two things that all living things need are energy and nutrients.
What is interdependence?
Interdependence is when organisms depend on each other for survival.
What are producers?
Producers are organisms that can meet their own energy requirements without consuming other organisms. All plants are producers and use the light from the sun to meet their energy needs. (Photosynthesis) All ecosystems must have at least one producer to bring energy into the system.
What are consumers?
Consumers are organisms that eat other organisms to meet their energy requirements and are not able to make the energy they need. ALL ANIMALS ARE CONSUMERS
What is a herbivore?
A herbivore is an animal that only eats plants.
What is an omnivore?
An omnivore is an animal that eats both plants and animals.
What is a carnivore?
A carnivore is an animal that only eats other animals.
What is a decomposer?
A decomposer is a organism that meets their energy and nutrient requirement by breaking down dead and decaying matter. All ecosystems must have at least one decomposer. These include fungi and bacteria
What is predation?
Predation is when one organism catches another organism and eats it. Carnivore and omnivores are predators because they eat other animals.
What are prey?
Prey are the animals that get captured and eaten.
What is symbiosis?
Symbiosis is the way in which animals interact with each other without eating them, it is a close often long term relationship and at least one of them benefits.
What is mutualism?
Mutualism is when two or more species of organism interact in a way that benefits both species.
What is parasitism?
Parasitism is when one organism lives on or in another organism and the ‘host’ is harmed where the parasite benefits.
What is commensalism?
Commensalism is a form of symbiosis when one species benefits but the other is not harmed.
What is competition?
Competition is when two species of organisms living in the same area might be in competition with each other if they are competing for food, shelter, resources, or if they are of the same species they may compete for mates.
