living in the uk- north norfolk coast Flashcards
What is the name of the case study
A UK coastal landscape
Describe the location of the North Norfolk coast
East Anglia, in the East of England. It is a low lying coastline with various habitats such as sandy beaches, salt marshes, sand dunes, and some cliffed coastline in the east. It is exposed to powerful waves from the north east.
Describe the geomorphic processes that take place along the North Norfolk coast
General and large scale- Longshore drift (east to west),
Localised and smaller scale- Mechanical weathering (freeze thaw) and mass movement on the cliffs in the east
Coastal erosion in the east and coastal deposition in the west.
Describe the geology of the North Norfolk coast
Underlying rock- chalk
Overlying rock- thick glacial sediment (till) deposited by ice sheets that spread south from Scandinavia during the last glacial period
How are geomorphic processes affected by geology
Cromer ridge- a terminal moraine (a glacial deposition from the front of the glacier), 100m tall just inland from Cromer
Sands and gravels deposited by glacial meltwater streams found along parts of the coast
What is the climate and how does it affect geomorphic processes
Relatively dry with warm summers and occasional cold winters.
Dry conditions causes till to dry out and crack- more likely to undergo geomorphic processes
Cold spells in winter- freeze thaw weathering
