Living and social conditions during the industrial revolution Flashcards
What were some of the conditions people had to live with in towns
-They lived in back-to-back houses
-The houses only had one window which resulted in poor ventilation
-The houses were built near factory chimneys
-Streets only had one water pump and a sewer which ran down the middle of the street
-Towns were very dirty which meant diseases easily spread
-Toilets didn’t flush which meant after people used them they had to sprinkle ash over them (once a week the soil cart would come to empty them)
What were workhouses
-Houses that workers were given as a place to live in exchange for their works
-Often the people who lived in them had nowhere else to go
-Factory owners used orphans from their workhouses to work in their factories
