Livestock and Forage (Southeast) Flashcards
Summer annual grasses
What are pearl millet, sorghum x sudangrass, sudangrass, and crabgrass?
Winter annual grasses
What are oats, wheat, rye, and annual ryegrass?
Warm season legumes
What are sericea lespedeza, perennial peanut, birdsfoot trefoil, and forage soybeans?
Cool season legumes
What are arrowleaf clover, ball clover, berseem clover, crimson clover, subterranean clover, red clover, white clover, hairy vetch, winter pea, and alfalfa?
Cool season perennial grasses
What are tall fescue and orchardgrass?
Warm season perennial grasses
What are bahiagrass, bermudagrass, dallisgrass, and johnsongrass?
The “Big 3” southeast forages
What are tall fescue, bermudagrass, and bahiagrass?
Important forage grass discovered on Suiter Farm in Menifee County KY by Dr. E.N. Fergus in 1931
What is tall fescue (KY 31)?
Tall Fescue fungus toxic to cattle due to the production of ergo alkaloids
What is endophyte Neotyphodium coenophialum?
Less time grazing, more time seeking water/shade, rough haircoat, decreased intake, decrease ADG (average daily gain)
What are symptoms of fescue toxicosis?
Type of fescue also known as friendly, or non-toxic due to the presence of endophytes that don’t produce the ergot alkaloids responsible for fescue toxicosis
What is “Novel” endophyte tall fescue?
Practice of integrating trees, forage, and grazing in a mutually beneficial way resulting in short and long-term income sources for agroforestry
What is silvopasture?
Summer perennial grass that can grow on poorly-drained and/or heavily shaded areas, has tolerance to close grazing, good drought tolerance, adequate forage quality when properly managed, low to moderate fertility requirements, and low to moderate level of management
What is Bahiagrass? (still responds to good management and high fertility!)
ADF and NDF
What are acid-detergent fiber and neutral detergent fiber?
ADF components that are hard for livestock to digest
What are cellulose and lignin?
