What was the Corn Laws in 1815?
No wheat was to be imported until the British price for it rose to 67 shillings per quarter for colonial imports and 80 shillings per quarter for foreign imports to levels that meant that peasants wouldn’t starve.
This was to increase the rich farmers profits but was bad for the poor because wheat made bread, which was very important in their diet.
What was the Game Laws in 1816?
Poaching against land owners was illegal, which was good for rich landowners but not good for families that couldn’t afford meat and would kill for their family, decreasing their diet.
What was the Income Tax law?
The Income Tax was abolished, which meant that extra revenue came from other places, such as indirect tax. Only the rich paid income tax, so the poor were more affected through the rise in taxes in goods such as tea, coffee and tobacco. This raised prices for peasants so it. decreased their wages.
What was the Factory Act in 1819?
No child could work in a factory under the age of 9 and regulated hours for those from 9-16. However there weren’t any register go birth so children’s age couldn’t be proved, so people lied.
What was the Truck Act in 1820?
It was banned to pay workers with tokens that could only be used in certain stores at high prices so that everyone was paid in cash.
What was the Poor Employment Act in 1817?
Loan commissioners had to put money in public work schemes authorised by the Parliament, so that money was given to local communities to put the poor into work.
What was the Church Buildings Act in 1818?
One of the ways that the poor were put into work was the Church Buildings Act, where £1 mil in 1818 and £500,000 in 1824 was given to commissioners to make Anglican Churches with free accommodation for the poor.
