Explain Nelson Street population?

A

Many Chinese migrants settled in the city in previous centuries - 10,000 are now situated in Nelson Street which is Liverpool’s Chinatown and it has added to the local architecture (13.5 metre Arch), culture, language and cuisine.
Additionally Liverpool Chinese Gospel Church is situated in the heart of Chinatown and not only performs regular Sunday services but also is a Chinese School for children and has English classes for adults

What are economic opportunities?

A

1) Number of households where no one works = 17.1% which is 3.4% higher than UK average
2) Merseytravel runs public transport in Liverpool which covers a large area, with different modes of transport (e.g. Bus and Train) - because of this, journeys by young people have risen by 168%
3) Buses are the backbone of the Merseytravel - 82% of all public transport journeys locally are made by them which is 400,000 people each day
4) The current fleet of trains is being replaced in a £0.5 billion investment and as a result, there will be a direct economic boost of £70 million a year, 1000 new jobs and wider economic growth
5) A 600km network of cycling and walking routes will be established over the next decade
6) Because of new transport systems it reduces the amount of cars on the road which reduces congestion and improves air quality and thus improves the quality of life for residents

Challenges of Dereliction

A

As businesses closed, 100s of factories, warehouses and docks closed, this amounted to 15% of the city
Areas near the docks suffered mass unemployment and growing poverty - 17.1% of households have no one working which is 3.4% higher than UK average
Dereliction = eyesore and has led to crime rates increasing
