Feeling of distension of the hypochondrium, chest, epigastrium or abdomen, sighing, melancholy, depression, moodiness, fluctuation of mental state, ‘feeling wound up’, feeling of a lump in the throat, irregular periods, distension of breasts before the period, premenstrual tension, irritability
Tongue: Normal body colour; severe cases w/ red sides
Pulse: Wiry esp. On the left side
Liver-Qi stagnation
Hypochondrial or epigastric distension, slight feeling of oppression of the chest, irritability, melancholy, depression, moodiness, a feeling of lump in the throat, a feeling of heat, red face, thirst, propensity to outbursts of anger, premenstrual tension, irregular periods, premenstrual breast distension, heavy periods
Tongue: Red on the sides
Pulse: Wiry esp. On the left side and slightly Rapid
Stagnant Liver-Qi turning into Heat
Hypochondrial or epigastric distension, hiccup, sighing, nausea, vomiting, belching, ‘churning feeling in the Stomach’, irritability, breast distension
Tongue: Normal or unchanged; Red sides (severe)
Pulse: Wiry; particularly on Liv & ST positions
Rebellious Liver-Qi
Hypochondrial pain, abdominal pain, vomiting of blood, epistaxis, painful periods, irregular periods, menstrual blood dark and clotted, infertility, masses in abdomen, purple nails, purple lips, purple or dark complexion, dry skin (severe), purple petechiae
Tongue: Purple esp or only on the sides; purple spots on sides (severe)
Pulse: Wiry or Firm
Liver-Blood Stasis
Irritability, propensity to outbursts of anger, tinnitus, deafness, temporal headache, dizziness, red face and eyes, thirst, bitter taste, dream-disturbed sleep, constipation w/ dry stools, dark yellow urine, epistaxis, haematemesis, haemoptysis
T: Red body, redder on the sides, dry yellow coating
P: Full-Wiry-Rapid
Liver-Fire Blazing
Fullness of the hypochondrium, abdomen or hypogastrium, bitter taste, sticky taste, poor appetite, nausea, feeling of heaviness of the body, yellow vaginal discharge, vaginal itching, vulvar eczema or sores, mid-cycle bleeding and/or pain, pain, redness and swelling of the scrotum, genital, popular or vesicular skin rashes and itching, urinary difficulty, burning on urination, dark urine, dysuria
T: Red body w/ redder sides, sticky yellow coating
P: Slippery-Wiry-Rapid
Damp-Heat in the Liver
Fullness and distension of the hypogastrium with pain which refers downwards to the scrotum and testis and upwards to the hypochondrium, pain is alleviated by warmth, straining of the testis or contraction of the scrotum, vertical headache, feeling of cold, cold hands and feet, vomiting of clear watery fluid or dry vomiting, shrinking of the vagina
T: Pale and wet with a white coating
P: Deep-Wiry-Slow
Stagnation of Cold in the Liver channel
Dizziness, numbness or tingling of limbs, insomnia, blurred vision, ‘floaters in eyes’, diminished night vision, scanty menstruation or amenorrhoea, dull-pale complexion without lustre, pale lips, muscular weakness, cramps, withered and brittle nails, dry hair and skin, depression, a feeling of aimlessness
T: Pale body esp on the sides; orange (severe)
P: Choppy or Fine
Liver-Blood deficiency
Dizziness, numbness or tingling of limbs, insomnia, blurred vision, ‘floaters in eyes’, dry eyes, diminished night vision, scanty menstruation or amenorrhoea, dull-pale complexion without lustre but with red cheekbones, muscular weakness, cramps, withered and brittle nails, very dry hair and skin, depression, a feeling of aimlessness
T: Normal coloured w/out coating or w/rootless coating
P: Floating-Empty
Liver-Yin deficiency
Headache that might be on the temples, eyes or lateral side of the head, dizziness ,tinnitus, deafness, blurred vision, dry mouth and throat, insomnia, irritability, feeling worked up, propensity to outbursts of anger, stiff neck
T: if Liv-Blood def = pale; if Liv-Yin def = sl. Red sides w/out coating; if rebellious Liv-Qi = normal or sl. Red sides
P: Wiry or Wiry-Fine
Liver-Yang rising
High temperature, convulsions, rigidity of the neck, tremor of limbs, opisthotonos, coma (severe)
T: Deep-Red, Stiff, dry yellow coating
P: Wiry-Rapid
Extreme Heat Generating Wind
Tremor, facial tic, severe dizziness, tinnitus, headache, hypertension, dry throat, dry eyes, blurred vision, numbness or tingling of limbs, poor memory
T: normal coloured w/out coating
P: Wiry-Fine
Liver-Yang rising generating Wind, deriving from Liver-Yin deficiency
Tremor, facial tic, severe dizziness, tinnitus, headache, hypertension, dry throat, dry eyes, blurred vision, numbness or tingling of limbs, poor memory, backache, scanty urination, night sweating
T: normal coloured w/out coating
P: Wiry-Fine
Liver-Yang rising generating Wind, deriving from Liv- and Kid-Yin deficiency

Tremor, irritability, propensity to outbursts of anger, tinnitus and/or deafness (w/sudden onset), temporal headache, dizziness, red face and eyes, thirst, bitter taste, dream-disturbed sleep, constipation w/dry stools, dark-yellow urine, epistaxis, haematemesis, haemoptysis
T: Red with redder sides and dry yellow coating
