Liver/Pancreas Flashcards
What pattern of damage is this?
What types of conditions cause it?
Random Multifocal distribution
Something blood borne (bacteria/viruses)
metastasis of tumors/neoplasia
What pattern is this?
What might cause it?
Centrilobular damage
processes that impair blood flow
- severe anemia
- some toxins (CCl4 is a classic cause)
What pattern is this?
What might cause it?
Midzonal
very rare damage, iron toxicity?
**glycogen accumulation will present in this pattern, but it’s typically not damaging
What pattern is this?
What might cause it?
Periportal Distribution
- some ascending infections from the portal tract (GI infections)
- specific toxins
What pattern is this?
What might cause it?
“Massive” hepatocellular damage
(damage to the entire lobule)
- specific toxins (blue green algae toxicity (k9), Tyler’s disease (horses))
What is this liver structure?
What are the three circled areas?
portal triad
- bile ductule
- arteriole
- venule
What is this image of?
icterus due to liver failure
What symptom of liver failure is shown here?
hydrothorax
occurs in liver disease because you don’t have enough oncotic pressure to keep the fluid in the vessels
What is this? Why does this indicate liver damage?
Photosensitization
Especially in ruminants, the liver inactivates chlorophyll so that it is no longer photoactive. Activated chlorophyll produces free radicals when exposed to UV light, which damages the skin
What condition is shown here?
Acholic feces
All of the green is huge amounts of bile backed up into the liver from severe cholestasis
the feces is white due to lack of bile breakdown in the colon
