Liver and Cartilage Flashcards
Bile Canaliculi
expanded extracellular space sealed by junctional complexes of adjacent hepatocytes
What are the cells of CT proper, cartilage, and bone?
fibroblasts, chondrocytes, and osteocytes
what is the ground substance of CT proper?
hyaluronic acid, high H2O
what is the ground substance of cartilage??
glycosaminoglycans: Chondroitin sulfate, hyaluronic acid high H2O (compared to bone),
what is the ground substance of bone?
hydroxyapatite, Ca, CO3, PO4, low H2O
perichondrium
sheath of dense irregular connective tissue around cartilage
What are the three types of cartilage? which ones have perichondrium?
hyaline, elastic, and fibrocartilage
fibrocartilage and hyaline cartilage found on articular surfaces DO NOT have perichondrium
how is cartilage repaired?
better in young animals: interstitial and appositional growth
in adults, replaced by fibrous CT.
This forms the outer shell of all bones (two different names)
compact bone (cortical)
this bone is found in the central region of bones, it contains bone marrow
cancellous (spongy or trabecular) bone
what is the inorganic component of bone called found within collagen fibers?
hydroxyapatite crystals
what are the three types of lamellae found in bone?
osteons, interstitial lamellae, circumferential lamellae
what are the canals through which haversian canals communicate with periosteum, bone marrow, and each other?
Volksman Canals
which type of bone develops directly from mesenchyme?
intramembranous bone. occurs in a well vascularized area
What is the function of Kupffer cells in the liver?
phagocytes!
