Liver Flashcards
Primary liver functions
synthesis, storage, detoxification, immunological functions
Synthesis functions of liver
glucose/glycogen, fatty acids, VLDL, urea, bile, amino acids, plasma proteins, ketones
Detoxification functions of liver
drugs/hormones, bilirubin excretion, ammonia, toxins
immunological functions
macrophages (Kupffer cells)
hepatocytes
functional cell of the liver, involved in protein storage, synthesis, carb transformation, cholesterol/bile synthesis, detoxification. Nutrients enter via diffusion or active transport
hepatic plates
rows of hepatocytes
sinusoids
endothelial lining preventing blood from coming in contact with hepatocytes, contain kupffer cells
kupffer cells
macrophages, phagocytose debris
space of disse
perisinusoidal space, separating sinusoidal lining cells and hepatocytes. plasma can enter this space freely
lobule
histological division of the liver that contains the portal triad
portal triad
portal vein, hepatic artery, common bile duct
Cori cycle
-occurs during exercise, lactate in muscle is transported to liver where it’s converted to pyruvate and then glucose
