Liver Flashcards
Tissue from a pig.
MDx?
A. Passive hepatic congestion
B. Massive hepatic congestion
C. Hepatosis Dietetica
D. Severe Diffuse hepatic necrosis
D.
AKA panlobar necrosis
Liver from a horse.
MDx?
Name of disease?
Etiology?
MDx: Chronic passive hepatic congestion
Nutmeg liver
Right-sided congestive heart failure
Hepatosis Dietetica is a lesion seen in swine that is caused by ______________. An associated lesion you might see in another area is __________.
Vit. E/Se deficiency
Mulberry Heart disease
Canine liver.
MDx?
A possible etiology?
Severe, diffuse, chronic fibrotic hepatitis
(This is END STAGE liver)
A possible etiology is long term use of Anti-epilectic drug therapy (Phenobarbital)
Liver of sheep. Note thickened, calcified bile ducts.
What is the most likely etiology?
Fasciola hepatica!
Liver abscesses from cow (ooze on cut surface). Most likely BACTERIAL etiology?
Fusobacterium necrophorum
Liver from a COW. Most likely etiology?
A. Fasciola hepatica
B. Fascioloides magna
C. Clostridium Chavoei
D. Fusobacterium necrophorum
B.
Fascioloides magna
The black parasitic tracts are the fluke POOP (more correctly known as hematin)
In general, for the cow:
Fasciola hepatica causes _______
while fascioloides magna causes _______.
cholangitis (affects bile ducts)
hepatitis (affects liver parenchyma)
Canine liver, post-mortem.
Can this be an incidental finding?
And what is the etiology?
Yes!
It indicates that the liver suffered from blunt force trauma in the past and is “fractured”.
The most likely etiology is a hit by car blunt force trauma. If the dog died as a result of the accident, you would likely see a large amount of blood and a hemoperitoneum as well.
This 1-2 year old cat presents to you at the RUVC during your seventh semester rotations. She is described as being ADR, not wanting to eat, and is clearly jaundiced. It is noted that she was recently adopted as a stray. CBC/chem tells you she has cholestasis and her eosinophil counts are up.
MOST LIKELY etiology?
Platynosomum fastosum
Common on St. Kitts!!!
Tissues from rabbit. Classical presentation.
MDx?
Most likely etiology?
MDx: Proliferative cholangiohepatitis
Eimeria Stiedae
Liver from a pig on St. Kitts, post-slaughter.
MOST likely etiology?
Name of condition?
Stephanurus
Milk-spotted liver
Liver from pig at slaughterhouse in U.S.
MOST likely etiology?
Name of condition?
Ascarus Suum
Milk Spotted Liver
Tissues from a turkey.
MDx?
Etiology?
Multifocal granulomatous hepatitis and diffuse granulomatous typhlitis
Histomonas meleagridis/Heterakis gallinarum
Which etiology is associated with causing acute or chronic liver disease in many different animals, and will cause portal fibrosis, biliary hyperplasia, and megalocytosis on histology?
A. Trifolium/Alsike clover
B. Aflatoxins
C. Blue-green algae/Microcystin
D. Pyrrolizidine alkaloids/Sinecio
D. Pyrrolizidines- sinecio, Crotalaria, Tichodesma, Heliotropium
Alsike- NO megalocytosis, also causes photodynamic dermatitis, mostly horses
Blue-green algae- centrilobular to massive hepatic necrosis
