Q

Where is the space of disse located?

What flow there and where does it come from?

A

between hepatocytes and endothelium of sinusoids?
plasma (protein rich fluid) flows from the sinusoids into the space of disse. Lymph sent via channels to inferior vena cava or thoracic duct

Q

What is portal hypertension?

What might happen as a result?

A

It is back pressure of blood into portal circulation due to flow obstruction.
Result: Varicosities in portal-caval anastomoses (hemerroids, caput medusaed and esophageal varices might result)

Q

Describe Ascites.

A
  • Portal hypertension increases lymph flow into the space of Disse
  • excess lymph seeps through the visceral layer of peritoneum and creates fluid build-up in the peritoneal cavity. (this is ascites)
  • a drop in blood volume stimulates renal salt and water retention until blood volume is restored
