Alliteration
The repetition of the same letter or sound at the beginning of close words. ex Sweet white wine
Allusion
Reference to a historical person or event. Ex David and Goliath
Hyperbole
A figure of speech based on exaggeration. Ex it’s so cold polar bears are wearing coats
Metaphor
Implied comparison. When one object is spoken as if it were another. NO like or as. Ex he is a snake
Onomatopoeia
Fitting the sound to the meaning. Ex Buzz Pow Bang
Oxymoron
A figure of speech in which two different words are combined. Ex bitter sweet love
Personification
Giving life or personality to otherwise lifeless objects. Ex the flowers danced
Pun
A play on words; used in such a way that a word is used in two different applications. Ex the farmer was outstanding in his field
Simile
The direct comparison of two things using like or as. Ex he ran like the wind
Theme
Subject/topic+comment on that topic= theme
Conflict
Struggle between two opposing forces, ideas, or beliefs
Internal conflict
Man vs self
External conflicts
Man vs man
Man vs nature
Man vs supernatural
Point of views
First person- main character talks
Third person limit- narrarator knows thought of only main character
Third person omniscient- narrator knows all thoughts of every one
Foreshadowing
A device which hints or warns of events to happen in future
