9
Q

How does your character react to their feelings about their family?

A

She’s always trying to participate in family activities — for example, the plays that her sister Jo (we stan our lesbian queen 🏳️‍🌈) writes. She lashes out at her sisters when criticized or insulted, and is very dramatic about it for attention.

Q

How would your character react to finding out that they have lost money and now cannot buy any luxuries so they can have enough to buy food?

A

She would probably throw a temper tantrum. If she didn’t do that, she would excuse herself and go cry about it in her room alone. Either way, she’d be very upset because now she can’t have as nice things as the other girls.

A

We’ve got father, mother, and each other.

19
Q

What is the meaning behind Line 1?

A

Amy is remarking how she she doesn’t think it’s fair that some people get so many nice things, and others don’t get any. She’s expressing her annoyance towards rich people, and also to being poor herself.

20
Q

What are you doing when speaking Line 1?

A

Sitting by the fire with JO, MEG, and BETH.

21
Q

What is your second line (Line 2)?

A

I shall get a nice box of drawing pencils.

22
Q

Who says the line before Line 2?

A

Beth.

23
Q

What is the line before Line 2?

A

I planned to spend mine on new music.

24
Q

Who says the line after Line 2?

A

Jo.

25
Q

What is the line after Line 2?

A

Mother didn’t say anything about our money, and she won’t want us to give up everything. Let’s each buy what we want, and have a little fun. I’m sure we work enough to earn it.

26
Q

What is the meaning behind Line 2?

A

Amy is saying how, with her $1, she is going to buy nice new drawing pencils. This is the first indication in the play that her passion is art.

30
Q

What is Line 3?

A

At least you don’t have to go to school with impertinent girls, who plague you if you don’t know your lessons, and laugh at your dresses and label your father if he isn’t rich.

31
Q

Who says the line before Line 3?

A

Beth.

32
Q

What is the line before Line 3?

A

It’s not a threat, but I think washing dishes and keeping things tidy…it fell to Beth to be the homemaker of the family, but if she complained this once, it was a rarity.

33
Q

Who says the line after Line 3?

A

Jo.

34
Q

What is the line after Line 3?

A

If you mean libel, I’d say so, and not talk about labels as if Papa was a pickle bottle.

35
Q

What is the meaning behind Line 3?

A

Amy is expressing her irritation and anger at the girls at her school. She’s indicating that they’re rich, spoiled, and rude people who make fun of you if you’re not as book smart or as rich as them.

36
Q

Who speaks between Line 3 and Line 4?

A

JO

37
Q

What are you doing when speaking Line 2?

A

Sitting by the fire with JO, MEG, and BETH.

38
Q

What are you doing when speaking Line 3?

A

Sitting by the fire with JO, MEG, and BETH.

39
Q

What is Line 4?

A

I know what I mean, and you needn’t be satirical about it! 12 year old Amy was the baby of the family, and she really did her best at school, but she was better at drawing than at vocabulary, and her schoolmasters always complained that she filled her primers with pictures of clouds and rabbits.

40
Q

What are you doing when speaking Line 4?

A

Sitting by the fire with JO, MEG, and BETH, but directly after “…you needn’t be satirical about it!”, turn to the audience and continue your line facing them.

41
Q

Who says the line before Line 4?

A

Jo.

42
Q

What is the line before Line 4?

A

If you mean libel, I’d say so, and not talk about labels as if Papa was a pickle bottle.

43
Q

Who says the line after Line 4?

A

Beth.

44
Q

What is the line after Line 4?

A

The clock struck six, having swept up in the hearth…everyone brightened to welcome her.
