Litosphere Flashcards
What is glaciation
Formation of glacier
What us erosion
Process of breaking down
What is freeze that weathering
Water in cracks above glacier freezes and thaws
Ice expands each time it freezes = forces cracks wider = breaks rock apart = creates scree
What is plucking
Ice sticks to rock and plucks out rock from valley
What is abrasion
Scree scrape along floor and acts as super charged sandpaper
2 corries back to back
Arete
3 corries back to back
Pyramidal peak
What is an Esker
Long, winding ridges of layered sand + gravel similar to railway embankments
-formed inside ice in tunnels in which metwater streames flowed
What are kettle holes
- block of dead ice
- partially burried by fluvio-glacial deposits
- when ice melts = hole left
- may fill with water to form lake
What are drumlins
Gentle slopes of layered sand + gravel at side of valley
- formed through depositions from glacial meltwater
- shaped like mound
What are erratics
Boylders carried by ice (often many km) + deposited in areas of completely different rock type
What is a kame
Oval holls which form in groups called swarms
-unsorted till appears moulded by ice to form blunt end with more streamlined, gentler lee slope
What are swarms
Oval hills
What is a moraine
Mounts of poorly sorted till where rock debris has been dumped by melting ice or pushed by moving ice
What are the 4 types of erosion
Hydraulic action
Abrasion
Attrition
