Lithology Flashcards
What is lithology?
Physical characteristics of rocks
Examples of igneous
Ganite
Scoria
Pumice
Obsidian
Sedimentary rock examples
Sandstone
Limestone
Shale
Metamorphic rock examples
Marble
Slate
Mohs hardness scale
The relative hardness of rocks can be measured using mohs hardness scale. It worked by seeing if the rock or mineral would be damaged by another object
Hardest 3 rocks and least hard 3 rocks according to Mohs hardness scale
Hardest:
Diamond
Corundum
Topaz
Weakest:
Talc
Gypsum
Calcite
Igneous rate of erosion and explanation
Slow erosion
Igneous rocks are crystalline- the interlocking crystals make strong, hard erosion resistant rock
Few joints so there is a weakness that erosion can exploit
Metamorphic erosion rate and explanation
Very slow erosion- crystalline metamorphic rocks are resistant to erosion
Many metamorphic rocks exhibit a feature called foliation, where crystals are all oriented in one direction which produces weaknesses
Folded and heavily fractured- weaknesses that erosion can exploit
How does permeability affect rocks erosion rate?
Pore space allows water within a rock.
Water is a heavy substance making the rocks have more pressure on the rock causing it to crack. Also, gravity can break down the rock causing mass movement
