Lithium - indications
A
1) manic episodes (bipolar disorder) - usually second-line if antipsychotics do not work (given in addition to antipsychotics)
2) hypo-mania
3) regular periods of depression, where treatment with other medicines has not worked

Lithium - side effects
A
- nausea
- vomiting
- diarrhoea
- a dry mouth
- a metallic taste in the mouth.
severe: Lithium toxicity :
Increasing diarrhoea, vomiting, anorexia, muscle weakness, lethargy, dizziness, ataxia, lack of coordination, tinnitus, blurred vision, coarse tremor of the extremities and lower jaw

Lithium - contraindications
A
- Cardiac disorders associated with Rhythm
- Renal impairment
- Addison’s disease
- untreated / untreatable Hypothyroidism
- Breastfeeding

Interactions
A
DO NOT HAVE WITH:
- Thiazide diuretics (reduce clearance of lithium)
- NSAIDs : increase serum lithium levels
- ACEi - reduce clearance of lithium

advice
A
if dose is missed do not double dose in 1 day.
