Pathetic fallacy
When the weather or atmosphere describes the mood
Eg: if sunny people will be happy, raining adds a sad theme to it
Personification
When a non human is given human qualities
Eg: the PEN was SITTING on the table
Simile
Comparing 2 things using LIKE or AS
Eg: she was LIKE a gazelle walking down the street
He was AS strong as a gorilla
Metaphor
Comparing 2 things using IS or ARE
eg: she IS a monster, you ARE a monster
Extended metaphor
Pick a metaphor, explain how and turn it into a long metaphor.
Eg: life is a rollercoaster, ( you can never prepare for the ups or downs life can bring)

Oxymoron
2 oppossite words side by side
Eg: the SMALL GIANT, small is opossite then giant
Juxtoposition
When you have 2 opposing ideas, you get an oxymoron amd you explain how
Eg: the small giant, (was tiptoing trying to reach the shelf however his small arms would not let him get a jar of jam).
This is juxtoposition as he is explaining how the giant is small
Symbolism
Objects are linked and present a meaning.
Eg, face mask represents covid, popcorn represents movies, nappy represents a baby
In macbeth the dagger links to death.
Semantic field
When words accross an extract can be linked to one idea
Eg, ring, gloves, punch referee - this links to the idea of boxing
Irony
When an events in text suprizes the characters.
Eg, mr birling in inspector calls ‘id offer thousands’ this is irony as youd never expect a man like him to offer money
Rhetorical question
A question which doesn’t require an answer
Eg, how would you feel if you had to wear a face mask everyday?
Hyperbole
HYPE- overexaggerate
Eg, so angry i want to kill him, so hungry i could eat 1000 burgers
Assonance
Repetition of the voewl sound, a e i o u
Eg, im to cool for school. Repetition of O
Alliteration
Words in a row begin with same letter
The big blue ball bounced down the road
Sibilance
Words in a row begin with a s or a s sound
Eg, the snake was slowly hissing, repetition of s sound
Euphemism
When you say something in an indirect matter
Eg, you dont have long left - told your going to die but said in a nice way
Emotive language
When the author makes the reader feel a particlar emotion
Sadness anger happiness
Onomatopoeia
When words describe sounds
Bang bang boom boom
Rule of three / triplets
3 words or phrases used in a row to describe something
Eg, this table is black, hard, and has 4 legs
Facts / stats
Writer uses evidence to support what they are saying
Eg, i talked with 70% of students who said they were annoyed with the new rules
Makes writing more persuasive

When you give a person animal features
Eg, john barked at me - barked means shout but bark is an animal feature of dog

When the writer repeats a word or phrase for an effect
