summarises existing information in a field of work, shows gap in literature which can be filled

shows analysis/development of argument, a way to present findings, helps understand modern work
how to get started
read widely on topic, decided based on time/geological setting/social setting
writing literature review
think of different views, need up to date literature, use original papers, review at end to see if up to date, clear intro/conclusion, needs to relate to study
