Alliteration
Diction
choice and use of words and phrases in writing which includes the vocabulary, style, and tone that an author uses to convey their ideas
Foreshadowing
providing hints or clues about events that will occur later in the story
Imagery
the use of vivid and descriptive language that appeals to the senses, creating a mental picture for the reader
Irony
a rhetorical device where there is a discrepancy between appearances and reality, or between expectations and outcomes
metaphors
a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable
=> draws a comparison between two unlike things, suggesting that they are similar in some way
=> metaphors assert that one thing is another
Personification
when a non- human thing is given a human quality
Rhetorical question
figure of speech in the form of a question that is posed for effect or emphasis.
Simile
a figure of speech that involves comparing two unlike things using the words “like” or “as” to highlight a similarity between them
Symbolism
a literary and artistic device where a symbol, which can be a word, character, object, or concept, is used to represent something beyond its literal meaning. Symbols are often imbued with additional layers of meaning, conveying complex ideas, emotions, or themes in a more indirect or metaphorical way.
Juxtaposition
A literary and rhetorical device that involves placing two elements, ideas, or characters side by side in order to highlight their contrasting qualities or to create a specific effect
