English Renaissance
- 14th-17th centuries
- Rebirth began in Italy after the Dark ages or Middle Ages when there was a plague and now they had time to invent things and live again
- Printing press, church reform (changes from Roman Catholicism to Protestantism), humanism, and theater
Elizabethan Period
- Was during the Renaissance
- Brought about drama/theater
- Human hierarchy that everyone has their place in society
Neoclassicism
- Late 16th century 17th-ish century
- Admired the classics especially the Romans
- Traditionalists who saw writing as an art and excellence could only be attained by studying writing. They studied closely the classics and imitated them
- All about reason, judgement, focusing on man/mankind’s position/function in the world and relationship to God
- Often used satire as a way to keep man perfect and in order
Victorian Period
- 1830-1900
- Bridges romanticism and modernism
- Lacked drama
- Focused on Influence of theory of evolution, Movements of political and social change, concerned with Contemporary Social problems like effects of Industrial Revolution
IMCE
Romanticism
- 1700s to mid 19th century
- Reaction to neoclassical period (an overemphasis on reason & no imagination)
- Favored creativity, imagination, examined inner feelings, saw beauty in nature and ruins of past societies (wrote Gothic/horror novels)
Modernism
- Early part of 20th century after Victorian era
- WWI occurred so a lot of focus on it
- Break away from rules, traditions and norms
- Fresh way at looking at mans place in the world
- Experimented in form and style
Postmodernism
- Was after Modernism
- During WWII
- Parody, Unreliable narrators, Fragmentation, Feelings of cultural exhaustion, Irony, Protagonist create their own version of reality

Realism
- Mid 19th century
- Portraying real life and write about regular folks living ordinary lives.
- Shows us how even ordinary lives are meaningful
Imagists
- Early 20th century
- Poets who wrote free verse, all about economy of language/matter of factness,
- Sparked the modernism era
New formalist
- Late 20th century and early 21st cent

- Last two decades of 20th century
- Focuses on moods, essence of life expressed exotic in morbid terms, transient (short time) sensations

- All about the setting
- refers to fiction or poetry that focuses on specific features, such as dialect, customs, history, and landscape, of a particular region

Mostly talked about the immigrant life here in America
Young adult literature
- Short and focuses on the main characters thoughts and actions that occur over a short period of time
- Coming of age in society and their experiences and struggles
Anglo Saxon/Old English Period
- Poetry was German influenced, heroic and Christian. Form was alliterative, unrhymed, no lyric poetry
- Prose was Latin influenced, reflects the influence of Latin-European culture, provides record of the founding/development of the church in England
The Puritan Period
- A lot of journals, diaries, letters, little fiction
- Realistic writing, wrote direct to the point, writing had purpose, very instructive, an emphasis on religious themes (bible, church, God)
Native American Literature
- One of the first forms of American Literature
- Oral myths about how the world was created, how mankind and culture emerged.
- Common theme: dangers of surrendering to indigenous cultural values and traditions as a result of contact with European civilization
- Respect for nature and animals
Revolutionary Period
Most writing was political, meant to be public: (newspapers, pamphlets, magazines, and speeches), sought independence.

American Renaissance
- Everything in the world is a reflection of the Divine Soul
- Self-reliance and individualism must outweigh external authority and conformity to tradition
National period
Imaginative literature began to emerge such as poetry, essays and sketches
Harlem Renaissance
- Black cultural movement in Harlem
African Literature
- Divided into three categories: precolonial, colonial and postcolonial.
- Precolonial mostly oral narratives sometimes accompanied by music and center around the trickster figure.
- Colonial examines the horrors of slavery and the slave trade, revolting against colonialism and drawing inspiration from Africa’s past.
- Postcolonial focuses on the clash between indigenous and colonial cultures, expressing hope for Africa’s future.
Century
Covers 100 years so if it’s the 19th century it’s 19x100=1900 so the 19th century covers 1800-1900
