Allegory
story, picture, or other piece of art that uses symbols to convey a hidden or ulterior meaning, typically a moral or political one
analogy
a literary device that compares two different ideas or concepts to help explain abstract ideas, support an argument, or add imagery to a story
connotation
a literary device that refers to the implied meaning of a word or phrase, rather than its literal meaning
Denotation
the literal meaning of a word, as defined in a dictionary, and is objective and emotionless
euphemism
a literary device that writers use to soften or avoid uncomfortable topic
ex. “Death: “Passed away”, “kicked the bucket”, “in a better place”, “given up the ghost”, “joined one’s ancestors” “
Paradox
a literary device that uses a statement or situation that seems to contradict itself but contains some truth or meaning

understatement
a literary device that describes something as having less of a quality than it actually does
aphorism
short, memorable phrases that convey a general truth or principle

Logos
persuasive device used in writing and public speaking that appeals to an audience’s sense of reason and logic.

literary device that involves appealing to an audience’s emotions to evoke a specific feeling or response.
