Metaphor
a figure of speech that identifies one thing as being the same as some unrelated thing
parable
a simple story illustrating a moral or religious lesson
Paradox
a statement or proposition that seems self contradictory or absurd but in reality expresses a possible truth.
Aphorism
a pithy observation that contains a general truth
Allegory
a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning
Figurative Language
a language that uses words or expressions whith a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation
Aristotle’s Appeals
Ethos (Credibility), Pathos (emotional), logos (logical)
Irony
a situation in which the result of circumstances is the opposite of that which might be reasonable expected. There are several different types of Irony
Repetition
the act or an instance of repeating or being repeated
Assonance
the repetition of vowel sounds to create internal rhyming within phrases or sentences
Alliteration
the repetition of sound in poetry or prose. Often, this repetition appears at the beginning of words but may also appear in the middle or the end
Rhyme Scheme
The pattern of end rhymes in a poem
Personification
a figure of speech in which an object, and idea, or a quality is represented as human
Periodic sentences
a sentence in which the main clause or its predicate is withheld until the end. Sentence is almost reversed
