It’s a word that represents a sound.

Compares something using like or as

Making a comparison, not using like or as
What is alliteration?
The repetition of same letter at the beginning of words.
What is personification?
Giving a non-human thing human characteristics.
What is pun?
A play on words that has several meanings.
What is hyperbole?
Exaggerated statements with claims not meant to be taken literally.
What is imagery?
Describing something with your senses.
What is symbolism?
Where basic objects take on a deeper meaning to connect to a theme.
What is antagonist?
the bad guy in the story
What is protagonist?
The hero who does the right thing
What is idiom?
A piece of writing that is not meant to be taken literally.
What is rhyme scheme?
A pattern of rhyming using letters (a, b, c, d, etc.)
What is stanza?
Groups of lines forming a unit of the poem
What is foreshadowing?
clues or hints an author gives to suggest events that will happen later in the story
What is allusion?
Figure of speech that makes a reference to a place/person/event.
What is paradox?
Situation that can’t exist but it does
What is irony?
Opposite happens in a certain unexpected situation.
What is satire?
Use of humor irony exaggeration ridicule to criticize people
What is parody?
imitation to make fun of original work. Exaggerated to make it funny
What is cliche’?
Expression has been used a lot so it’s annoying and boring.
What is oxymoron?
Words that are opposite of each other. (pretty ugly)
What is assonance?
Repetition of similar or identical vowel sounds.
What is consonance?
Repetition of similar or identical consonant sounds.
what is juxtaposition?
Placing 2 words side by side to compare them.
What is enjambment?
One line of poetry carries on to 2nd one
What is portmanteau?
Word made by combining two other ones. (smog = smoke and fog)
