allegory
A short moral story with an expressive style using fiction
alliteration
The repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words
assonance
The repetition of vowel sounds within non rhyming words.
Characterization
The way a writer creates and develops characters’ personalities
protagonist
the positive force of the story
antagonist
the negative force of the story
connotation
set of associations implied by a word in addition to its literal meaning
denotation
the most specific or direct meaning of a word, in contrast to its figurative or associated meaning
dialogue
written conversation between two or more characters
dialect
a form of language that is spoken in a particular geographic area
diction
the author’s word choice
fable
a brief tale used to illustrate a moral or teach a lesson
farce
light dramatic work in which highly improbable plot situations, exaggerated characters, and often slapstick elements are used for humorous effect
allusion
an instance of indirect reference
hyperbole
a figure of speech in which the truth is exaggerated for humorous effect
irony
a special kind of contrast between appearance and reality
metaphor
a figure of speech that makes a comparison between two things which are unlike
onomatopoeia
the formation or use of words such as buzz or murmur that imitate the sounds associated with the objects or actions they refer to
oxymoron
a rhetorical figure in which incongruous or contradictory terms are combined
paradox
seemingly contradictory statement that may nonetheless be true
personification
a figure of speech in which human qualities are given to an object, animal, or idea
