Antithetical sentences
Sentence where the phrases or clauses balance each other by virtue of their likeness of structure, meaning or length
Balanced sentence
Sentence containing an independent clause and one or more subordinate, or dependent, clauses
Complex sentence
Sentence that contains two independent clauses joined by a semicolon or by a coordinating conjunction preceded by a comma
Compound sentence
Sentence that contains two or more independent clauses and one or more subordinate, or dependent, clauses
Compound-Complex sentence
Sentence that has its main clause at the beginning of the sentence
Loose or Cumulative sentence
Sentence that has its main clause at the end of the sentence. It forces the reader to retain information from the beginning of the sentence and often builds to a climactic statement with meaning unfolding slowly
Periodic sentence
Sentence that contains one independent clause
Simple sentence
The arrangement of words and the order of grammatical elements in a sentence

A poetic and rhetorical device in which normally unassociated ideas, words, or phrases are placed next to one another, often creating an effect of surprise and wit
Juxtaposition
Involves constructing a sentence so the subject comes before the predicate
Natural order of a sentence
