refers to language that describes concepts reather than concrete images.
Allegory
an extended narrative in prose pr verse n which characters events and setting represent abstract avalities and in which the writer intends a seconf meaning to be read beneathe the surface of the story.
Anecdote
short simple narrative of and incident often used for humurous effects or to make a point.
Annotation
explanatory notes added to a text to explain cite sourcer or to give bibliographical data.
Antithesis
the presentation of the contrasting images the ideas are balanced by word phrase clause or paragraphs.
Aphorism
short often witty statement of a principle or a truth about life.
Apostrophe
Ususally in poetry but sometimes in prose the sevice of calling out to an imafinary dead or absent person or place or thing or personified abstaction.
Argumentation
writing that attempts to prove the validity of a point of view or an idea by presenting reasoned arguments, persuasive writing is a form of argumentation.
Cacophony
Dissonance harsh awkward or dissonant sounds used deliberately in poetry or prose opposite of euphony.
Caricature
Descriptive writing that greatly exaggerates a specific feature of a persons appearance or a facet of personality.
Colloquialism
a word or phrase used in everyday conversation and informal writing in which all parts contribute to the development of the central idea.
Connotation
implied or suggested meaning of a word because of its association in the readers mind.
Consonance
repetition of identical consonant sounds with in two or more words in close proximity as in boost/ best.
Conundrum
a riddle whose answer is or involves a pun.
Deduction
the process of moving from general rule to a specific example.
Description
the picturing in words of something or someone through detailed observation of color motion sound taste smell and touch.
Diction
word choice and element of style..
Ballad
is a poem that tells a story and is meant to be sung or recited.
Biography
the story of a person’s life that is written by someone else.
Blank verse
unrhymed iambic pentameter.
Caesura
a pause or sudden break in a line of poetry.
Cause and Effect
two events are related as cause and effect when one event brings about or cause the other event happens first is the cause.
Character
a person who is responsible for the thoughts and actions within a story poem or other literature.
Chorus
see refrain.
Clarifying
the reader’s process of pausing occasionally while reading to quickly review what he or she understands.
Cliche
a type of figurative language containing an over use expression or a saying that is no longer considered original.
Climax
see plot.
