simile
Definition: A comparison between two different things using the words “like” or “as.”
Example: “Brave as a lion.”
hyperbole
Definition: An exaggerated statement not meant to be taken literally.
Example: “I’m so hungry I could eat a horse.”
personification
Definition: Giving human-like qualities to non-human entities.
Example: “The wind whispered through the trees.”
allusion
Definition: A reference to another work of literature, event, or person meant to evoke specific meanings.
Example: “He’s a real Romeo,” referring to a romantic character.
irony
The expression of meaning using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect. For example, a fire station burning down is ironic.
metaphors
A figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable. For example, “time is a thief.”
imagery
Visually descriptive or figurative language, especially in a literary work. For example, “The autumn leaves were a dance of fiery red and golden yellow.”
symbolism
The use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. For example, a dove can symbolize peace.
