soliloquy
a dramatic device in which a character is alone and speaks his or her thoughts aloud
connotation
a meaning or association of a word that goes beyond its literal or dictionary definiton (childish vs youthful)
simile
a direct comparison of dissimilar objects, usually using like or as
diction
word choice to create a specific effect
Hyperbole
Extreme exaggeration to add meaning
motif
a recurring feature of a literary work that contributes to the theme
tone
the author’s attitude toward the subject of a work.
1st person POV
the narrator is a character in the story
persona
the speaker or narrator of the text
apostrophe ( not ‘ )
addressing someone or some abstraction that is not physically present (Referencing Death as a being or something)
Theme
the underlaying maid idea of a literary work. a universal question, concept, or conflict explored by an author
Situational irony
When there is a disparity between what is expected and what actually occurs
Metonymy
using an object to embody a more general idea ( “crown” for royalty)

a sudden moment of understanding that causes a character to change or to act in a certain way
denotation
the dictionary definition of a word
3rd person POV
the narrator is outside of the story
enjambment
in poetry, the running over of a line or thought into the next verse
aside
a dramatic device where a character makes a short speech intended for the audience but not heard by other characters on stage
alliteration
repetition of the initial consonant sounds of words
Dramatic Irony
When the reader or audience knows something a character does not
Verbal Irony
When the speaker says one thing but means the opposite
figurative language
language that represents one thing in terms of something dissimilar (category for other lit terms like comparisons or symbols)
Allegory
A figurative mode of representation conveying a meaning other than the literal
