Stanza
Arrangement of lines in a poem, kind of like a paragraph
Juxtaposition
Putting 2 unlike things near each other to highlight contrasts
Chiasmus
A reversal of the order of words in two phrases that are basically the same; a crossing
Point of view
The position of the narrator in relation to the story/poem; narrator’s outlook from which the events are depicted
Personification
Giving human qualities to non-human things
Caesura
A break in the middle of a verse; a sense pause
Simile
Comparing two things using “like” or “as”
Imagery
Description of people, places, things, or events that is especially vivid
Narrative distance
The “space” between a reader and an author. Deeply connected = small; not connected = large
Repetition
The use of the same word or phrase multiple times
English sonnet
14 line poem in iambic pentameter; 3 quatrains and a heroic couplet; used often by Shakespeare
Metaphor
Comparison between two things saying that they are each other
Assonance
Repetition of vowel sounds in close proximity
Unreliable narrator
Credibility is compromised for some reason; not trustworthy in their rendition of events
Anaphora
Repetition of a word or expression at the beginning of successive phrases
