Alliteration
Repetition of a consonant at the beginning of each word
Allusion
Reference to a well known person, place, or event.
Crisis
The turning point in the action.
Onomatopoeia
Sound of a word suggesting it’s meaning.
Hyperbole
A serious, deliberate exaggeration
Pun
Play on words that sound the same but have different meanings.
Theme
Lesson or morale of the story that the author is trying to convey.
Symbol
Representation of something abstract with imagery.
Oxymoron
Contradictory terms
Paradox
Statement that does not make sense at first as it is contradictory
Foreshadowing
A hint towards a later part of the story
Imagery
A mental picture created by words (can be all senses)
Suspense
Mental uncertainty about the outcome of events
Pathos
Sympathy for the character

Saying something when you really mean something else.
- Simile, like or as comparison

- Personification, human qualities to an inanimate object
Denotation
The literal meaning of a word
Connotation
Meaning of a word that has developed over time.
Irony
An outcome that is the opposite of what one would expect
