What are Symbols?
An object, person, or place that stands for something else.
A rainbow symbolizes hope and promise.
What is a Theme?
Underlying message the author wants the reader to understand.
Compassion, Courage, Honesty, Loyalty
What is an Inference?
Prediction in the story; logical assumption.
If you see someone eating a new food and he or she makes a face then you infer that he or she doesn’t like it.
What is Parallelism?
Pattern of words or sentence structure.

What is Repetition?
Repeat a sound or word for emphasis.
Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow.
What is Text Structure?
Arrangement of the story; novel.
Sequence/Process, Description, Time Order/Chronological
What is a Simile?
A figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind used to make a description more empathetic or vivid.
He is as busy as a bee!
What is Supporting Textual Evidence?
(Citations): Material to prove a claim.

What is a Metaphor?
Compare two things-state one is the other.

What is a Noun?
A person, place, thing, or idea.

What is a Claim/Point of View?
The argument made by the writer or speaker.
What is Mood?
A temporary state of mind or feeling.

What is Foreshadowing?
Is a warning or indication.

What is an Extended Metaphor?
A metaphor introduced and then further developed throughout all or part of a literary work; especially a poem.
What is Pace?
The speed at which the story is told.

What is the Author’s Tone?
The words that are added to show point of view, emotion, or attitude.
What is Irony: Verbal/Situational? What is Dramatic Irony?
A difference between the expected and actual outcomes of a situation or action.
Dramatic: The audience knows something that the characters don’t.
What is Figurative Language?
Creates comparisons by linking the senses and the concrete to abstract ideas.
EX: “It is the east, and Juliet is the sun”
What is Fortune’s Fool?
Romeo calls himself “fortune’s fool” because he feels that fortune has played a cruel trick on him.
What is a Tragic Hero?
A character who is neither completely good nor completely bad, but also a member of royalty.
EX: Romeo is a tragic hero because he does many good things, but many bad things, as well.
What is Foil?
A Character that has traits that are opposite of another character -being melancholy to the other’s happiness.
What is a Pun?
A form of word play that exploits multiple meanings of a term, or of similar-sounding words,m for an intended humorous or rhetorical effect.
