What is Author’s Purpose ?
The reason an author writes.
Ex: Persuasion, Entertainment, Informing, and Explaining.
What are Rhetorical Devices ?
Language that is used to have an effect on the audience or audiences.
Ex: Figurative Language, Repetition, Parallelism.
What are Symbols ?
Objects, Places or People that stand for something.
Ex: # means hashtag, X means times.
What is a Theme ?
An underlying message the author wants the reader to learn or understand.
Ex: Actions speak louder than words.
What is a Inference ?
A prediction or assumption made by you or someone else from the story.
Ex: I infer that ……..
What is Parallelism ?
A pattern of words or sentence structure.
What is Repetition ?
A repeating sound, word, or emphasis.
What is Text Structure ?
An arrangement of the story.
What are Similes ?
A figure of speech comparing two unlike things that is often introduced by like or as.
What is Supporting Textual Evidence ?
What is a Metaphor ?
Comparing 2 things without using like or as.
What is Point of View ?
The perspective of what the character or narrator is seeing while telling the story.
What is Mood ?
The emotional response the author has throughout the story.
What is Foreshadowing ?
An indication of what is going to happen what is coming up in the story.
What is an Extended Metaphor ?
A metaphor that extends through Lines, Paragraphs or Stanzas.
What is Pace in literature ?
It is how fast or slow the story is moving for the reader.
What is Author’s Tone ?
The mood that the author implies through their writing.
What is Verbal/Situational Irony ?
Verbal is the opposite of what the person is saying.
Situational is when the situation is different from what is happening.
What is Figurative Language ?
Creates comparisons by linking the senses and the concrete to abstract ideas. Words or phrases are used in a non-literal way for particular effect.
Ex: Simile, Metaphor, Personification.
What is Fortunes Fool ?
What is Tragic Hero ?
A character in a dramatic tragedy who has virtuous and sympathetic traits but ultimately meets with suffering or defeat.
What is Foil ?
Characters whose personalities are opposite.
What is Pun ?
What is Dramatic irony ?
When the audience know something and the characters don’t know it.
