What is author’s purpose?
The reason an author writes
Ex. The author wrote the story about Jane Pickens in order to entertain the reader.
What is Rhetorical Devices?
Figurative language such as repetition or parallelism to effect an audience.
Ex. Alliteration, Allusion, Amplification, Analogy
What is Symbol?
An object, person, place, stands for something else
Ex. Her hand went to the symbol around her neck.
What is Theme?
Underlying message author wants the reader to underline.
Ex. “Europe is the Next Century”
What is an Inference?
Prediction in the story, Logical assumption
Ex. I believe he will break his leg on saturday
What is Parallelism?
Pattern of words or sentence structure
Ex.My dog not only likes to play fetch, but also chase cars.
What is Repetition?
Repeat a sound or word for emphasis
Ex. Life is to short to spend it with repetition of old dreams that never happened.
What is Text Structure?
Arrangement of the Story, Novel, Poem, Essay
Ex. The dog chased the mailman
What is a Simile?
A figure of speech the directly compares two unlike things using like or as
Ex. Your house is built like a mountain
What is supporting Textual Evidence?
Is any material that serves to prove a claim
Ex. because, for instance, for example
What is a metaphor?
A figure of speech that makes a comparison between two things that are basically unlike but have something in common.
Ex. Your so ugly
What is Claim/Point of view?
Examine the claims made by that author
Ex. “The author focused on the Bullying”
What is mood?
A temporary state of mind or feeling
Ex. Cheerful, Breathtaking
What is foreshadowing?
Be a warning or indication of (a future advent)
Ex. “The leaves fell early that year”
What is a Extended Metaphor?
A version of metaphor that extends over the course of multiple lines, paragraphs, or stanzas of prose to poetry.
Ex.”Hope is the thing with feelings.
What is pace?
How fast or slow the story is moving for the reader.
Ex. Jane august uses dialogue and description to slow the pacing in certain scenes.
What is author’s tone?
The mood implied by an author’s word choice and the way that the text can make a reader feel.
Ex. Cheerful, Outraged, Angry
What is Irony: Verbal/Situational?
Occurs when the actual result of a situation is totally different from what you’d expected.
Ex. A character stepping out into a hurricane.
Ẁhat is Figurative Language?
creates comparisons by linking the senses and the concrete to abstract ideas.
Ex.This coffee shop is an icebox!
What is Fortunes Fool?
Fate and destiny.
Ex. defending yourself
What is Tragic Hero?
A character in a dramatic tragedy who has virtuous and sympathetic traits but ultimately meets with suffering or defeat.
Ex.Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, and Othello.
What is Foil?
Prevent
Ex.John Steinbeck, Of Mice and Men.
What is Tragic Flaw?
Means to miss or to mark.
Ex.Cowardice, ambition, over-protectiveness, and self-sacrifice.
What is Dramatic Irony?
The expression of one’s meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect.
Ex.In Romeo and Juliet, the audience knows that Juliet is only asleep-not dead-but Romeo does not, and he kills himself.
