Rhetorical Devices
Techniques used to enhance an argument or drive home a point
Ex. Parallelism
Symbol
an object, person, place, or thing that stands for something else.
Theme
underlying message, the author wants the reader to understand
Inference
prediction in the story; logical assumption
Parallelism
pattern of words of sentence structure
Repetition
repeat, a sound or word of emphasis
Text Structure
arrangement of the story, novel, poem, essay
Simile
comparse things using like or as
Supporting Textual Evidence
material to prove a claim
Metaphor
compare two things; state one is the other
Mood
general atmosphere or emotions a piece of work evokes in the reader.
Foreshadowing
literary device used to give an indication or hint of what is to come later in the story.
Pace
how fast or slow the story is moving for the reader
Irony: verbal/situational/Dramatic
Situational- the irony of something happening that is very different to what was expected
Verbal- when what is said is the opposite of the literal meaning.
Dramatic- Dramatic Irony occurs when the audience (of a movie, play, etc.) understands something about a character’s actions or an event but the characters do not.
