Rhetorical Devices
A technique used to enhance an argument or prove a point/make the point stick

Something that stands for something beyond itself
Theme
The central idea or message that the writer wants the reader to understand
Inference
A logical assumption that is based on facts and knowledge of the story
Parallelism
When the same pattern of words/structures are used to show ideas that have the same level of importance
Repetition
A technique where a sound, word, phrase or line is repeated to spread emphasis
Text structure
How an author arranges parts of a story

Comparing two or more things using like or as
Supporting Textual Evidence (S.T.E)
Evidence/material used to support a claim
Metaphor
Comparing two thing by stating one thing is another
Claim/Point of view
The writers views/ideas on a subject
Mood
The atmosphere the writer has created for the reader
Foreshadowing
Clues/hints the author has laid out to suggest what might happen latter
Extended Metaphor
Comparing two unlikely things together at some length

Irony: verbal/situational
Verbal: Using words in a figure of speech
Situational: takes place when the opposite of what is expected actually happens.
