What is Author’s purpose?
The reason an author writes.
What is a rhetorical device?
Figurative language such as repetition or parallelism to effect an audince.
What is a symbol?
An object, person, place; stands for something else.
What is a theme?
The underlying message. What the author wants the reader to understand.
What is an inference?
Prediction in the story; lofical assuption.
What is parallelism?
A pattern of words or a sentence structure.
What is repetition?
To repeat a sound or word for examples.
What is text structure?
Arrangement if the story; novel, poem, esssay.
What is a simile?
Using like or as to compare two things.
What is supporting textual evidence?
Material to prove a claim.
What is a metaphor?
To compare two things.
What is the mood?
The feeling or atmosphere that a writer creates for the reader.
What is foreshadowing?
A writer’s use of hints or clues to suggest events that will occur later in a story.
What is the pace?
The speed of the story.
What is irony?
A special kind of constant between appearance and reality - usually one in which reality is the opposite of what it seems.
What is figurative language?
Language that communicates meanings beyond the literal meanings of words.
What is fortune’s fool?
bring the idea of fate and destiny back into the audience’s mind.
What is a tragic hero?
Characters who are involved in historically or socially significant events.
What is foil?
A character that provides a striking contrast to another character.
What is a tragic flaw?
A decision that is often an error in judgment.
What is a pun?
A joke that comes from a play on words.
