Simile
Comparison using like or as
Alliteration
Reposition of a constant sound at the beginning of words
Assonance
Repetition of a similar vowel sound followed by different constant sounds close together
Connotation
Various feelings, image, and memories that surround award
Exapanded Moments
Slow downs to stretch out the tension in the story
Ex: “she stopped, checked he watch, straightened her skirt, and pushed the doors open
Foreshadowing
Hints or clues to suggest what will happen later in the story
- Builds suspense
- Prepares the reader for events
Idiom
Expression in one language that cannot be translated directly in another.
Ex:”Bee in her Bonnet” “Back to the drawing bored” “Don’t cry over spilt milk”
Imagery
Words and phrases that help a reader experience in their mind what is happening in the story or poem; metal picture
Ex.Snow
Metaphor
Compares two unlike things that have things in common. The comparison is made without “like” or “as”. Ex: The sun is a flower. The lamp post stood guard on the corner.
Onomontopia
To use words that represents sounds. EX: BOOM KABOOM
Oxymoron
Two more words that contrident (go against) each other
Ex: pretty ugly ,big shrimp
Parallelism
Use of similar of identical language, structures, events, or ideas in different parts of the text
Ex: dancing butterflies, Chirping crickets, and dandelions fluff.
Personification
the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form.
EX: Toy Story, The Brave Little Toaster
Repetition
A specific word, phase or structure repeated several times usually close together.
EX: of the people, by the people, for the people
Symbolism
The use of specific objects or images to represent abstract ideas
Ex: Statue of Liberty= Freedom
