Alliteration
String of words that (mostly) begin with the same letter
Anology
Comparison between one thing and another
Atmosphere
Mood or tone of a place, situation or creative work.
Characterisation
A description of the nature or features of someone or something.
Dramatic Irony
The significance of a characters actions or words is clear to the audience/reader but unknown to the character.
Emotive Language
Certain words or phrasing used to bring out certain emotions among the reader.
Foreshadowing
A hint, warning or indication of a future event.
Hyperbole
Exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken seriously.
Imagery
A description that appeals to any/all of our five senses.
Juxtaposition
Two things being seen or placed closed together with contrasting affect.
Metaphor
Where a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally capable (saying something is not like).
Modality
High or low modality to express certainty, possibility or uncertainess.
Motif
Action, thing (etc) that has a symbolic significance to help explain a theme.
Onomatopoeia
A formation of words to form a sound associated with them (eg bang, drip, sizzle).
Oxymoron
A combination of contradictory words (eg cruel kindness).
