Alliteration
The repetition of identical consonant sounds e.g pensive poets. The effect is that it sounds pleasing, and gains the attention of readers. Also signifies that the words are linked together thematically, and it puts a spotlight on the subject contained.
Anaphora
Repetition of the same word or phrase at the beginning of a line. The effect is that it emphasises words.
Assonance
Repetition of identical vowel sounds in different words. e.g deep green sea. The effect is that it creates rhythm and helps embed words in a mind.
Caesura
A short pause within a line of poetry. Effect is that it can be dramatic and add theatrical feel to a line.
Chiasmus
Reversal of two elements. Effect is that it engages to make powerful points and adds emphasis
Enjambment
A line having no end punctuation but running over to the next line. The effect is that it speeds up the pace to create a sense of urgency, tension or rising emotion
Hyperbole
Exaggeration. The effect is that it emphasises the magnitude of something through exaggerated comparison.
Imagery
References that trigger the mind to fuse together memories of sight, sounds, tastes, smells and sensations of touch. Effect is that it draws us into a sensory experience and provide us with mental snapshots.
Internal rhyme
An exact rhyme within the line of a poem. Effect is that it adds to the meaning of words in a poem and make the poem more unified.
Metaphor
A comparison between two unlike things that describes one thing as another. The effect is that it conveys vivid imagery that transcends literal meanings.
Personification
Attributing human characteristics to non human things. The effect is that it can help readers understand, sympathise with or react emotionally to non human things.
Simile
A direct comparison between two unlike things. The effect is that it helps describe one things by comparing it to another.
Juxtaposition
Placing two elements close together in order to compare or contrast the two, to show similarities or differences.
Diction
Choice of words in a poem. The effect is that it steers the readers thoughts.
Sibilance
The repetition of letter sounds that have a hushing or hissing quality. The effect is that it adds rhythm and enhance the tone of the poem.
