  • comedy of manners genre popular - bawdy, scandalous, unfaithful wives and cuckold men
  • made fun of various social classes
  • very satirical of other authors, religious figures, puritan movement etc.
  • less focused on nature and philosophy and more on society, behaviour, etiquette, classes, social relationships
    etc.
  • britiains political identity changing after the civil war reflected in lit
  • some writers preoccupied by religion due to religious upheaval
  • freedom and liveliness
