- rebirth of culture and art - popularisation of theatre, appealed to all classes so writers had a diverse audience - written to appease varied tastes - manipulation of traditional conventions of tragedy and comedy - religious turmoil - influenced by ovidian myths - interweaving the bible, classical myths, british history, and superstitious beliefs - political turmoil - monarchy - courtly lover trope - hunting a social sport for upper class men

characteristics of the restoration period
- comedy of manners genre popular - bawdy, scandalous, unfaithful wives and cuckold men - made fun of various social classes - very satirical of other authors, religious figures, puritan movement etc. - less focused on nature and philosophy and more on society, behaviour, etiquette, classes, social relationships etc. - britiains political identity changing after the civil war reflected in lit - some writers preoccupied by religion due to religious upheaval - freedom and liveliness

- satirical, ridiculing, exposing society's vices and double standards -hypocrisy of some laws and religious values etc. - some writers = non -conformist - not conforming to the doctrines of the CofE - witty, literary inventiveness - focus on classism - print journalism defined the age - some prose took on a journalistic tone

- frustrated by arrogance of traditional poetry - wanted it to be more conversational and ordinary - praises nature and the sublime - critical of age of enlightenment and industrial rev - focus on individuals, non conformist - rebellion and human emotion = common theme - spoke out for masses and injustices against the lower classes - sympathetic with french rev early on - natural imagery - against organised societal boundaries

- earnest - not satirical - didactic and moral - focused on being a good person - rebellious decadent movement towards end (1880s to 1890s) - cutting edge of invention and manufacturing

- 1880s - 1890s - followed an aesthetic ideology of excess and artificiality originating in france - beliefs in superiority of human fantasy and aesthetic hedonism over logic and the natural world
