What is an alliteration
The repetition of the constant sound in order to emphasize an idea
What is an allusion?
A brief reference to a person event or place real or fictitious or to a work of art. It can be referring to something historical literary (to another text) or biblical (referring to something in the bible)
What is a conflict?
A disagreement between two opposing forces. Can be human vs human, human vs nature or human vs self
What is characterization?
The methos used by a writer to develop a character. the method includes (1) revealing the character’s actions, (2) revealing the character thoughts/words, and (3) revealing the reactions of other characters. this can be done either directly or indirectly.
What is foreshadowing?
the use of hints or clues to suggest what will happen later in literature
What is a hyperbole?
immense exaggeration used for impact and lightens tone.
What is imagery?
language that appeals to the five senses: sight, sound, taste, smell, touch.
What is irony?
the difference between what is expected and what actually happens or what is said and what is meant. is in 3 main types:a) dramatic irony (is only in plays) b) situational irony and c) verbal irony (sarcasm)
What is a metaphor?
a comparison between two seemingly unlike things
What is an oxymoron?
placing two contradicting words (right) together
What is personification?
it is giving human attributes to animals or objects (the cake screamed my name)
Who is the protagonist?
the hero or good guy in the story
What is a symbol?
an object or action that represents something more than its literal meaning
What is a theme?
the general idea, insight or lesson about life that a writer wishes to express and it has to be a full sentence.
Who is the antagonist?
the opponent or bad guy in the story
